BACKUP IS FUNDAMENTAL
Why, What, When, Where & How
WHY Do You NEED to BACKUP
A backup plan is the most essential need for any computer user. You don't realize how vital your computer and data are until they are gone. There are numerous ways you can lose your data: failed hard drive, accidental deletion, file corruption, hardware destruction, theft, and viruses. When you do not have your data backed up you have a great chance that you will lose some or all of your data. By not backing up you could lose valuable time and irreplaceable data such as accounting databases, photos, and music. Backing up will save you countless hours of frustration. You will also have the peace of mind that your data is safe.
WHAT is at risk with no backup
- PICTURES: ...ALL family photos for the last five years have been corrupted and are unrecoverable.
- MUSIC: ...songs you bought on iTunes would need to be re-purchased, do you even remember all the names?
- QUICKBOOKS DATABASE ...Imagine all of your accounting and payroll data vanished ... now you have to re-enter all of this year's data before your taxes are due in two days.
- EMAIL: ...Remember you where saving that email just in case you needed to reference it later, now it's gone. All your Outlook data, inbox, sent items, sub folders, contacts, and calendar items... GONE!!
- DOCUMENTS: ...All of your My Documents folder could be lost forever.
- PASSWORDS: ...Do you store a copy of all your passwords on your computer? They could all disapear.
WHEN Should You Implement a Solution
Every computer user who has valuable data should have a backup system in place IMMEDIATELY. There is no predictor of when your data could be lost. Once your critical data is lost there is virtually no way to restore it.
WHERE Should Your Backup Be Stored
Let's start by stating the number one place your backup data should NOT be stored. Your backups should NOT be stored on your computer's hard drive. If you are making backups on your computer all data would still be lost if you encounter a critically failed hard drive or theft. It's best to have multiple historical backups. There are two options for storing your backed up data:
- store critical data at an offsite location. For example if you are backing up your office computer you could store at least one backup at your home at all times.
- store critical data onsite in a clean, dry, safe area.
HOW Can You Backup Your Data
1.) Hot Swappable hard drives
2.) External Hard drives
3.) Remote Backup
4.) CD/DVD: manually or custom scheduled script
